Mmm… After Poser Game Dev, I don't have much faith in SM. That shit was just a money grab that provided no useful tools whatsoever. Plus it switched your program to authentication, so if you went offline for a couple weeks... well your Poser no longer worked. Double whammy of fail. And now their brilliant "new product" is to just tack on somebody else's rendering engine? 'Kay.
Will wait and see, but have zero positive feelings about it.

I'm guessing this is in response to the whole GamerGate fiasco and resulting bullshit spewed out on various sites?
Personally I can't think of a single gamer site that isn't terrible. They have all given positive reviews to games that don't deserve them. Simply because it's in their best interests to. Their success is dependent on game developers being successful and producing more games. When you are getting paid to give an opinion on a product, you are going to do whatever it takes to make sure that more of that product is getting produced. So if they have to put lipstick on a pig to get it to sell, then they will. Like Kungfutse said, just go with Reddit and personal research, maybe a bit of gut-instinct as well.
And on a side note, the blog that set the whole thing off is insane. How can somebody be that much of a floppy dish-rag? Almost makes one believe Quinn's claim that it's a 4chan plot.
Eh…. Piracy is a tough one. As one of the wee little people who is lacking a "non internet dependent income stream" I find myself internally debating it all the time. On one hand, the pirate sites (which shall remain nameless) do serve as a fantastic resource of free advertising. When something goes up on those sites I usually see an increase in sales and subscrips. The downside is that most "sharing pirates" tend to lack any sense of restraint or common sense, and post as much as they can, as fast as they can. At which point it stops being beneficial, and starts hurting business. Tons of stuff posted at once is bad. And it's even worse when it's the new stuff.
Regardless, any time I see a set go up on one of those sites the "greedy money-grubbing capitalist who likes to be able to pay rent and eat from time to time" cringes inside me. So I generally have to take a moment to step back, let the blood rage fade, and gain a bit of perspective. The first and foremost the reason they are "sharing" it, is because they like the work. So that's good. So keeping that in mind I send them a nice polite email explaining my side of the issue and some gentle requests. And on the rare occasion that doesn't work, then DMCA the fuck out of them! Burn their village and rape their livestock.
Wow. Some pretty strident activists for both sides here. Personally I'm not really keen on it IRL. I use it plenty in "art" simply for the taboo/fetish aspect. But actual real-life animal sex just doesn't do much for me. But hey, if somebody wants to and owns the animal, more power to 'em I guess. Last I checked animals don't exactly possess the cognitive abilities to think "ZOMG i r being violated!". Though if I ever hear of a dog constantly running thru the sprinklers to take a "rape shower" afterwards I might revise my opinion. (Yes, I know, not exactly sensitive to animal rights.)
On the flip side, what do we do with dolphin rapists? Dolphins will occasionally attempt to aggressively have sex with divers/snorklers. Seriously. It happens. Look it up. What should be done about them?! Do we not have the right to swim in the ocean too? Or is it okay simply because they are animals and it is in their nature? Who will stop the dolphins?! (Besides the Japanese that is.)
