  • actually, when involved with sex, the brain makes us idiots:

    (point at 4.15 min)

but then again, if we are creators, we take a step back & work the easel some more.
    so character:
i would look at the result being an image of a scene with a character, therefore everything that composes the image will suggest meaning & interpretation - techniques we're feed by movies & tv shows (part of the media vocabulary)

The Dark Knight (directed by Christopher Nolan): Nolan uses extremely low angle shots to give the Joker a more powerful image in The Dark Knight, especially during the scene where the truck he was driving is flipped over and he gets out and starts shooting at Batman. In this scene, the angle actually goes from a normal medium close up and slowly moves into a low angle shot.

  • @'Fred5150':

I've actually watched a lot of documentaries about art modern and medieval (thank you BBC4) so I know what you mean re imagery and symbolism.

I bet rl erotica producers don't take things to this level of intellect!

what do you expect when come to the sex ? :P:P

    kinda hard to find though

  • @'Fred5150':

what does it actually take in order to infuse "character" into a character, and make that character/personality register in the mind of the viewer?

there was a time when most of us common folk were illiterate, we could & did only rely on icons painted on the glass of the church to tell us the story.
but those images were heavyly codified, every pose & attitude had a meaning, explicite for the common folk back then, but no more to internet residents, unless you study those kind of imagery in art schools.

but illiteracy is coming back with the advent of video/multimedia culture and our vocabulary has shifted back (from words) to codified imagery. the pin up pose set hasnt changed much in ages with tilted head & side glances.

i guess i shouldnt be hard to find a icon-ary (dictionary for images ?) that classifies poses towards intent in representation. (going to browse the webz & back for links)

    edit:
    Iconography, Semiotics

  • @'hzr':

I dont wanna piss anyone off but I dont really think any of our toons has really shown alot of character so far. The exception are some of Epochs gals, Lali from erogenesis and thats pretty much about it :)

Even the Blackadder girls really dont have much of a character so far as they usually just behave like some fucktoy and theres no communication going on other than some very basic expressions. This is not meant to spill dirt on Blackadder or any of you (me included). But even something with such a high visual quality doesnt really give me alot of character so far.

Maybe my bar is just set too high, I dont know…

On the other hand, I believe that porn also works without a massive backstory and lots of character. In the end its just another spice that you throw into the cauldron that adds to the flavor.

I thought a little more about the above and came up with this

what does it actually take in order to infuse "character" into a character, and make that character/personality register in the mind of the viewer?

    @'Supro':

For the most part, you'll have a design for a character done and have a vague idea of what the character's personality or traits are. You don't really get the idea of the character until later on when you work on them more. It sort of happens organically or sometimes they'll be different things that influence the way you treat the character. But you, at some point, end up with a completely different character than what you started.

Thats pretty much my experience so far

  • I generally start with a character sheet, listing the general emotional charateristics I want them to have.

After that's done, I started thinking how to convey them visually, either in shape, color/tone, or expressions.

The next step is creating a situation - basically a scene and how the characters interact with each other. It's very organic and probably the reason why it's so hard to nail them into renders (use this pose here, light them this way, have them wear this etc).

  • Well you haven't pissed me off, I pretty much agree with what you wrote.

Although, I have no problem with the "fucktoy" concept ;)

  • Amy Vanderhoff :: Aim he, wander off ? (hihihi)
i like Jung's archetypes theory but disagree with it.
imaginaries dont take a life of their own. its a nice dream-like feeling, but it all resumes to our brain/self making sense (try to) of experience & feelings.
of course, suspension of disbelief is part of the process: let the imaginary be while the play is on stage, but once the curtain is drawn, the play over, its also an important part to work the puppet's strings, review the scripts, oil the cogs - the behind the scene work of the artist.

  • @'SinCyprine':

i prefer exploring the dark of self.

That would make you a follower of Carl Jung not Sigmund Freud

But I understand the point your making re the subconscious , because last night while watching tv the thought popped into my mind "Amy's last name is Vanderhoff"

  • i'm more freudian about it: i consciously draft my character but what ever it turns into is my inconscious speaking (not the character).
That nuance is important in that sense you can learn lots about yourself if you dont suppress or obfuscate or otherwise veil the information behind (s)he did it not me. Also, i came to kind of fear what i might discover but thats the point, some prefer high risk sports, i prefer exploring the dark of self.

  • @'Fred5150':

Heres a question asked by writers, and asked to writers also.

Did you suggest the characters personality, or did the character suggest their own personality to you?

I realize its an odd sounding question considering the fact that the character is your own creation, and therefore only has what you choose to give them, but thats creativity I suppose

That's actually a good question. My character suggested their personality to me :)

  • creating lir took a good while. i wanted her to look distinctly different then anybody else's. that's where the tattoos kinda came it. her personality and story kinda changed and develop as time when on.

  • When I created my asian girl 2 years ago, I wasn't really thinking about her personality. After a while, just looking at her, I envisioned her in many situations, both erotic and day-to-day ones. That's how I slowly developed her personality in my mind.

  • Perhaps more or less… I couldn't say that one of my characters would be my version of the "perfect" woman, They have all some characteristics I like, but no one of them have all characteristics, I don't even think, that it is possible to have them all, because some of them disbar each other.^^

  • I wondered if, as men (I'm assuming most of you are) if we create a female character do we just make her into own idea of what a perfect woman is?

  • if i created a character, i will become that character by personality/traits
