Heheh. Well, I don't believe I'll be using as many resources as the whole dream home would require. Though I am curious how taxing it'd be resource-wise just using the pool outside… I could include the building (empty inside), or make a dupe prop from primitives.

As to my large scene...What I basically will do is make it (whichever set I use) really dark with a spotlight on the stage while in the dark is faint dim lighting, but enough you can make out people there, some crowded along the runway or stage, while there's clusters in groups along the back. Lighting the audience isn't super important but a little more prominent for the up-close people.

If I go with the more contemporary setting, this is what I'll use (rearranged seats and other stuff)

I own it already, plus a dancing pole I got from an i13 pose set, or possibly a custom made piece to extend higher if the prop I have won't do.

And even if not for this particularly large scene project, I can well see creating another project or two...or three utilizing this.

As for the set used for the juicy scene with 9 people? It'll have mirrors on the ceiling and walls, though perhaps not covering everything, and holes cut out for lights. Yes there's the implication of "cameras" behind the 2-way mirrors (because there's actually supposed to be cameras in the story). Then the obligatory furniture. Luckily I won't need to have all characters in every shot and I hope to do what essentially amounts to the "noodle time trick" for those chinese martial arts movies. Besides those fucking, very few of the others will only be seen in parts on the sides or in the background from shot to shot.

I know mirrors tend to add a shit ton of time to renders, and the more people used the more time as well.

I think what I'll try to do is work my way up to this project with smaller ones in this set or similar. To get a feel for it.

Agreed. I tried to render a scene using a complete Dream Home with the Eclectic texture set and 4 G2Fs fully clothed, and even with the 6GB 980 and 12GB Titan Z set as the rendering devices it still tried to dump it to the CPU (i7 4770K with 32 GB of RAM).
I'm not using water cooling, though, just because of the concerns you expressed - water is an excellent conductor of electricity lol

However, once the render actually started, it did switch to the GPUs. I guess it just needed the CPU to compile all the shaders.

You might also have to render in 2 stages - background first and then figures, as long as the camera doesn't shift focus.

You could probably also render the scenery (room, whatever) as a panorama or HDRI and set that as the texture on a flat panel "room box" or the environment map.

Well… i7 3770K and 32GB ram. Obviously derate for system functions. I do have a H-100i closed loop liquid cooler. Just don't want to get into a habit of using it much because once a seal goes or a hose bursts the whole thing's fucked and there's little to no warning... except to keep en eye on hours of usage vs expected lifetime, which even then is a total crap shoot.

I have a 28" 4K monitor. Everything is very crisp and sharp in comparison to 2K. But you need to use the DPI scaling or text is too darn small. This is where I really like Win 10. The DPI scaling sucks in Win 7 in comparison, this monitor prompted me to upgrade to 10, and I'm glad I did.

Well if you're doing scenes with tons of people it may work out with SubD off. To get that many in the frame it they'll be from further back and probably not matter anyway, then the amount of VRAM may come into play with so many different textures.

Can't wait to see how the Pascal cards do. If the performance boost is like with gaming, it's a great boost.

How big is your 4K monitor? Some will be Iray, some 3Delight, others I'll be using toon or comic style shaders…or similar.

For now I'm sticking with a combination of genesis 2 & older (mostly generation 4) content. Daz released HD updates for genesis 2 (free for XMAS last year) generation, and I bought the generation 4 converter which has some HD textures of its own.

Well, good to know it'll be okay for 2-3 person...hzr doing that summer scene with (I think) 5 people is a little more like it for some of the things I want to do.

Buuut I'm thinking for more extreme there's just no way. :dodgy:

The biggest of which...thankfully I'll only be portraying a huge crowd surrounding a runway in a large room and there's workarounds for this to be sure (which would otherwise get verrrry ugly for any hardware in no time), but in some shots it may be unavoidable to have multiple people off the sides. The runway scene won't be the focus but rather a foreshadowing so it won't be totally vital. The juicy scene has 9 people, though and I do want a shot (or 2 or 3) of all of them.

For others I'm thinking I can do "trick photography" with rendering. There are several.

I don't wanna give away too much details though.

I'm glad I listened to DarthHell about investing in image editing for postworking and for making MATs.

I looked at the prices of the 980ti quick. If I were in your shoes, I'd wait for the Iray support for the 1070 & 1080s. The extra 2 GB of RAM will probably be handy. Not sure how long, they've been waiting on the final Cuda 8 & drivers which were just released a week ago. Optimistically guessing a month or two for Iray in DAZ. There's a thread over at Daz where it's being followed.

Paid almost $700 for my 6GB 980ti msi lightning lite about a year ago. But yeah, looking at the upper end of what I want to do, I'm thinking or wondering if a pair of 8GB 1080s might be necessary at bare minimum.

The mobo+cpu generational upgrade option is about my next step... which still sounds marginal from a performance standpoint, though I'd take about anything I could get. MY issue is having a damn near 1600W PSU running for an extended period on the 120V rail in an old apt that isn't up to code. Sure that breaker is rated for 15 Amps, but when you're running close to that limit, you practically either have to shut off nearly everything in your apt. or fire up your generator. My generator can run for up to 8 hours tops on a full tank (nevermind the noise or bother).

Never thought I'd be looking at Titans just for results, and knowing I'd spend years paying that off. >_>

There's an interesting read over at Daz' forums where Mech4D talks about how optimizing your machine can make more of a difference than simply dropping in a more powerful card. Basically a 760 with everything running at 100% efficiency (CPU has enough power to run all PCI lanes, etc) will outperform a 980 that isn't running at 100%. She went into detail about it a little bit, but I stopped about halfway through because I already had my answer.

Got my Titan Z in today, much sooner than expected (seller said Tuesday of next week initially).

Took a bit to get it installed. I replace the external 780 with it, but it kept saying it didn't have enough resources. Took about 2 hours to find the right things to remove/disable/uninstall before it sorted out.

Since each card also takes up resources for their audio functions, and I'm only using one card for audio, I had to remove the PCI bridge that the excess audio functions were on. Removing the audio functions didn't work, so I had to remove the entire bridge in Device Manager (view Resources by Connection, or View Devices By Connection - either one works. You get a hierarchal view just like a 3D figure layout, and you'll see the branches that terminate on audio functions).

Rendered a scene that's been giving me trouble in about 20 minutes. Took an hour or more before. Only took 12GB of system RAM and about 50% CPU, whereas before it took over 20GB of RAM and maxxed the CPU.

Now I can start replacing my other cards with 12GB models :D
Not sure if I can free up any more resources for external cards
I'm getting down to base system functions now, like the ones that actually run drives and display functions. I'll have to pick up another external card and see what's what.

The good thing about the Titan Z being triple-width: it's wide enough to stand on its end better than the 780 did :lol:

Ok, so I snapped under peer pressure and got a Titan Z. Probably could've gotten it cheaper somewhere else, but probably not. :P
Probably should've went with the 3-piece Titan 6GBs, but the price dropped $100 on the Z. The Titan 6s would still have been a deal, though. Fuck. :lol:

I found the Memory Usage Display setting in Precision X, and my 980 is using 1400 MB just for driving the monitor.
Using Contemporary Living and 2 G2F with only hair and stockings, and the scene objects for lights (Iray materials), I'm using a total of 7687 MB of vram (2152 MB on two, 3382 MB on the 980 primary driver), at 98-99% GPU utilization, and it's dumping off to the CPU.

That doesn't seem right. The 780s are 3GB, and are only using 2GB. The 980 is 6GB and only using 2GB on top of the 1.4GB driving the display. I could understand if they were running SLI where half the RAM is used for that.

I am sitting right @ 4 GB use on 5 x Genesis 2/3 in a scene, that would almost top out a Z. If Nvidia does another twin GPU solution, I would be on it like poo poo on stink. Just be aware, the Titan Z is actually 3 card slots wide, so I would probably water cool it.

Space Station Living Quarters, with two HD Genesis 3 females and some minor tweaks & additions to the scene and I'm using 8.5 GB of video RAM! I am driving a 4K monitor though, I'm using over 2 GB with only a few apps open. Looks like any future upgrade for me is 12GB+ only.

3 slots ain't no biggie. I'd stick it on a Thunderbolt card and just use it for rendering.

I'm looking at 3 listings right now:

A 12GB Titan Z for $850
A 12GB Titan X (not Pascal) for $850
3 Titan 6GB for $320 each

Leaning towards the 3 Titan 6GB. For $110 more, I get 6GB more RAM and almost 3x cores over the X and Z.
