However, maybe I'm overly optimistic about the whole thing,

If you think something is really easy and profitable, yet nobody seems to be doing it, chances are it's not :)

I made couple of animations, if I optimize the scene I can get one frame in 1280x720 rendered in about 3 minutes. And this is on a pc with gtx 1080 + 2x 980 ti. So if you want to have something rendered in the same quality, real time, 24 fps, you just have to figure out how to render it about 4000 times faster. On a $3000 pc.

Yea but that's rendering using programs like 3ds Max, that is trying to do photo realism using the CPU. Vray advanced. Even with GPU rendering like iray, vray RT, this is all in the world of pre-rendering.

Export your models, and animation script to a real-time engine like Unity or Unreal should work just fine.

Yes, it wouldn't be providing the same quality as iray, but it won't be necessary considering immersive effects of VR.

I imported a static model of a kitchen cabinet into Unity, and in VR it look great, but inherently didn't have the same value as a naked model.

A few scripted controls that switches between static scenes just like all the current 2d image packs would work just fine as well.

  • Render Quality in real-time will not be as good as pre-rendered scenes, that's understandable, however, either Unity or Unreal are getting pretty good. That the gap between RT and PR is at this point negligible considering the immersive effects of a VR headset.

Low market penetration, true, market research are suggesting only about 100,000 in Vive and Oculus headsets sold, .3% of all steam users have one. But Gear VR, had nearly a million users(http://fortune.com/2016/05/11/oculus-samsung-gear-1-million-users/), and PSVR has sold over 100,000 just in the past month.

Not talked about, is that most likely each one of these VR users will want to try porn at some point. 3DX offers more immersive experience with positional tracking.

I understand piracy is an issue, but people who can afford $600+ will probably be able to afford to pay a price, even if it's to justify their purchase by having more content.

The first step, perhaps, isn't even to create a ground up VR experience, but rather just take the assets and scripted animation from whatever Miro has, and porting and polishing in either Unreal or Unity engine. From the engine perspective you just load the camera script provided by SDK's from oculus and Vive.

In fact it'll probably take Miro the same or less time to do, because there won't be a need to spend days pre-rendering scenes. Just the animation scripts to be completed, then ported over to a real-time engine.

Quality won't be at it's maximum level, but the VR effect might make up for it.

However, maybe I'm overly optimistic about the whole thing,

  • We have discussed VR as a possibility for future installments, but as far as I know it's still a ways off. I wrote a fairly detailed script concept for a VR animation actually (independent of G4E) but it's not on the table to be produced for pretty much the reason Rikolo explained… It's a gambit to produce something that so few people could watch and get the full experience from.

  • VR devices have very low market penetration, also it would be very hard to get it render in real time while approaching anything even close to the render quality there is right now.

TL;DR you would be bleeding money to create a product that very few people can even use.

  • @'Mempho':

Any chance for a VR version of girlfriends4ever? It would be amazing to see all scenes through eyes of each girl in VR…

6000 views and a year later no one's chipped in?

It'll be a lot of work but porting the assets over to unity or unreal engine but it shouldn't be outside the realm of possibility. I've seen a few demos of the idea, and with all the work put into 3D assets viewing them in VR would be much more immersive and benefits from positional tracking, something VR videos can't do.

Should consider a team and expanding the business. Become a full fledged studio.
