Well I have been using risers this entire time. But I am actually looking at getting into watercooling. So then I would be @ 4 x 780's per workstation, 1 render node with 4 x Tesla.
Since this is what you do for a living, maybe look into getting one of these:
4K investment and you probably have to have an additional circuit put into the house to support it. I am taking at look at one myself. 16 x Teslas would rock some octane porn frames quick fast and in a hurry.
But yeah, I already have the Teslas, I got them for 120 a pop (made offer).

you're getting 4 of the Tesla M2090s?
so have you found an easy solution to stack multiple GPUs externally?

@ miro
I am building 4 of these cards into a render node. I will let you know how it goes. Since I got many of the cards @ once… my price per was like 120 each. BOOM!
EDIT: The weak Euro is making octane much easier on the pocketbook...

Anyone in the states….

@'gazukull':
We can get 780 Ti's for 429 USD, still much cheaper than a 980 and better for Octane.
Who is the we you are referring to specifically?
-
Probably the 780 Ti is the best bet now for new cards, since 780's have almost all but dried up new. We can get 780 Ti's for 429 USD, still much cheaper than a 980 and better for Octane.

I see, guessing the 980 is about the same speed as the original 780 then, hmm

I stole this from the thread over @ OTOY forum:
Simply opened a scene in standalone and pressed on the obj
Octane 2.06
PT + Alpha shadows
Code: Select all
1x 780 Ti > 6.7 Ms/sec
2x 780 Ti > 13 Ms/sec
1x 980 > 3.08 Ms/sec
2x 780 Ti + 980 > 16.7 Ms/secOctane 2.14 with Coherent ratio 0.350
PT + Alpha shadows
Code: Select all
1x 780 Ti > 13.5 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)
2x 780 Ti > 27 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)
1x 980 > 11.8 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)
2x 780 Ti + 980 > 38.5 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)Octane 2.14 with Coherent ratio 0.350
PT + NO Alpha shadows
Code: Select all
1x 780 Ti > 17 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)
2x 780 Ti > 32.5 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)
1x 980 > 12 Ms/sec (+/- 2Ms/sec)
2x 780 Ti + 980 > 47.5 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)Octane 2.14 with Coherent ratio 0
PT + NO Alpha shadows
Code: Select all
1x 780 Ti > 13.8 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)
2x 780 Ti > 29 Ms/sec (+/- 1Ms/sec)
1x 980 > 11.5 Ms/sec (+/- 2Ms/sec)
2x 780 Ti + 980 > 40 Ms/sec–------------
The code has been optimized, it just isn't all that great.

has the 9xx series been optimized to 7xx speed or not yet?
-
225w capped, for use in server farms

Interesting, what about energy consumption under heavy load?
