  • I like putting up and decorating a tree, drinking egg nog, and wearing a yule hat. I enjoy opening presents too, even if it's just an empty box with money inside or like a babushka doll of boxes lol.

My immediate family gets together and has a Christmas dinner some Christmases but honestly ever since my father died my mother stopped putting up a tree or getting into the spirit at all. She wouldn't even let me get out the tree and set it up because she has it stuffed who knows where and always complained about it being too much of a hassle to get it out and put it up, even if I was offering to do all the work. It was really depressing to be honest…

I was glad when I moved out and could revive my Christmas traditions at my own place how I wanted them to be. I love Christmas traditions even though I'm an Agnostic Atheist but let's just be honest here... The Christians just stole it from the Pagan Yuletide festival anyways.

  • Well… You kind of knew it had to end sometime. I mean, no one lives forever....

But tomorrow night (12/19/14) will be the last time this will happen:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfurmGiKZ5k

"I was doing a show at the Bottom Line in New York City called Leader of the Pack with Paul Shaffer. So one night he asked David to come down and see the show. On the show the next night, David tells Paul, “Are you still doing that show down at the Bottom Line?” And Paul said yes. And he said, “Well, you know that song that that girl sings? That Christmas song? That’s the greatest Christmas song I’ve ever heard. We need to get her on the show.” I thought it was going to be a one-time-only thing. It happened year after year after year. That it was amazing that it kept going and kept growing…

"And David always comes over and gives me the biggest hug. People can’t see what I see when he’s hugging me, and looking at me in the eye, and whispering in my ear telling me thanks for coming. That means more than anything, because I don’t have to be there and he does not have to have me there. It’s kind of a bond that we have that’s really unspoken, and I think those are the best kinds. I’m hoping that really doesn’t happen—[that I don’t] break down like I did at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. But it’s going to be a joyful time. It’s tears of joy. It doesn’t have to do with being sad because it’s over because everything comes to an end.

    • Darlene Love

  • Not very many, anymore. We've all gotten older, the family has gotten smaller and more spread out….

I'll probably watch or listen to a version of "A Christmas Carol" sometime....

One gets over materialism when one buys several really nice gifts for friends over several years in a row…only to see they don't really care about most of them enough to take care of them or not to leave them behind. In some cases, they don't even reciprocate either. All you have left after that is what the friendship is worth. Some have remained good friends, even gotten better over time. Most others, less so. Funny...I always knew generosity was the best way to read and learn one-another. Now I understand how so.

    yup, 100% with you there.

When you realize in adulthood that you can buy yourself basically whatever you want anytime

lucky you… recession hasnt been kind to my better half & i.
she usually goes to her parents; i stay home, play games - xmas aint anything special to me, maybe an excuse to spend what ever the bank didnt steal already, and probably a second hand book.
Then again, xmas was when i got that new graphic card

Perhaps I should reemphasize "basically" with the disclaimer "within reason". I meant that in the case that one usually knows better what he wants best and other folks who aren't as savvy are confused when trying to make a list to ask what you want. Thankfully Internet hyperlinking simplifies it a bit.

However, more important is what I said in the follow-up, though.
    @myself:

all you really care then is the fact that they thought of you enough to at least get a card

TBH the recession hasn't been kind to me either, but since I'm used to living as the working poor, and have a multitude of skills and experience with an entrepreneur's mind...suppose I've weathered it a little better than most people? I dunno.

  • Ever since I first learned of Home Alone, I always watch the first movie, maybe the second around christmas time.

For as long as I have lived, my father bakes his awesome christmas cookies. They can make people very possessive over them.

I guess we all open one present on christmas eve but of recent years, I haven't been too insistent on presents. When you realize in adulthood that you can buy yourself basically whatever you want anytime, all you really care then is the fact that they thought of you enough to at least get a card.

I like putting up lights and decorating the tree. I have an lectronic Darth Vader, a glass Wonder Woman whose older than I am, and Lt. Worf.

Maybe firing off a bottle rocket because it's cold and not particularly fire prone outside–I more reserve that for new years but sometimes I do it for christmas too.

My folks play old christmas songs--50s era sounding. Can't remember who it is but it's unmistakeable when I hear it. My dad would play it on vinyl...then on CD...now on internet.

  • For me its not Christmas until I have watched Elf :)
